FAQ

What Is CBD?

CBD is the major non psychoactive component of the plant, Cannabis sativa. Cannabis plants contain 60+, naturally occurring compounds, called cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of these compounds found in all cannabis plants.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most well-known cannabinoid and is associated with the psychoactive properties of marijuana. Unlike THC, CBD does not cause a “high”effect, but offers relief and benefits associated with health and well-being.

Cannabis plants are separated into two types of crops, known as hemp and marijuana. Afina uses only organically grown industrialized hemp in our products.

According to a 2013 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, CBD is a potential medicine for the treatment of a variety of health conditions, including inflammation of the nervous system, vomiting, nausea and anxiety.*

What Are Some Benefits To Using CBD ?

There are some notable benefits to using CBD, that are backed by science, although more research is needed. We will be updating our website as research findings are published. Here are a few benefits we know about today:

1. CBD Relieves Pain and Inflammation

Among common CBD benefits, natural pain relief tops the list for many. Evidence suggests that cannabinoids may prove useful in pain control by inhibiting transmission of nerve cells in pain pathways. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD significantly suppressed chronic inflammatory and nerve pain in rats without causing a pain tolerance. Researchers suggest that CBD may represent a novel class of therapeutic agents for the treatment of chronic pain.*

2. CBD Reduces Anxiety

Studies using animal models of anxiety and involving healthy volunteers clearly suggest an anxiety relieving effect of CBD. Cannabidiol has shown to reduce anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorders. Researchers suggest that it may also be effective for panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In 2011, a total of 24 never-treated patients with social anxiety disorder were given either CBD or placebo 1.5 hours before the test. Researchers found that pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, memory loss and discomfort in their speech performance, and significantly decreased alertness in anticipation of their speech. The placebo group presented higher anxiety, impaired memory and discomfort.*

3. CBD May Be Used In Treating Cancer

Several scientific reports demonstrate that CBD benefits include possessing effects that inhibit cancer cell migration, adhesion and invasion. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics found for the first time that CBD potently and selectively inhibited the growth of different breast tumor cell lines and exhibited significantly less potency in non-cancer cells.

CBD behaves as a non-toxic compound and studies show that doses of 700 milligrams per day for 6 weeks did not show any visible signs of toxicity in humans, suggesting that it can be used for prolonged treatment.

Not only does the research show that CBD benefits including being effective in fighting breast cancer cells, data also suggests that it can be used to inhibit the invasion of lung and colon cancer, and it possesses anti-tumor properties in certain types of cancers (i.e, it has been used to treat leukemia in humans).*

4. CBD Relieves Nausea

Cannabis has been used for centuries for the suppression of nausea and vomiting. Research has revealed that among more than 80 cannabinoid compounds found in CBD helps to eliminate nausea, motion sickness and vomiting in animal studies. A 2012 animal study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology found that CBD possesses anti-nausea qualities.*

5. CBD May Treat Seizures and Other Neurological Disorders

A 2014 survey conducted by researchers at Stanford University was presented to parents belonging to a Facebook group dedicated to sharing information about the use of cannabidiol-enriched cannabis to treat their child’s seizures. 84 percent of the parents reported a reduction in their child’s seizure frequency while taking CBD. Of these, 11% reported complete seizure freedom, 42% reported a greater than 80% reduction in seizure frequency, and 32% reported a 25–60% seizure reduction. Other beneficial effects included increased alertness, better mood and improved sleep.

Later in 2014, researchers reported on preliminary results of a study involving children with treatment-resistant epilepsies”. Patients received a purified 98 percent oil-based CBD extract called Epidiolex, which is made by GW Pharmaceuticals. After 3 months of treatment, 39% of the 23 patients had more than a 50% reduction in seizures, with a 32% median reduction. These preliminary results support the animal studies and survey reports that CBD may be a promising treatment for treatment-resistant epilepsy and it is generally well-tolerated in doses up to 25 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.*

6. CBD May Lower The Incidence of Diabetes

A 2006 study found that CBD treatment significantly reduced the incidence of diabetes in non-obese diabetic mice from an incidence of 86% in non-treated mice to an incidence of 30% in CBD-treated mice.*

7. CBD Promotes Cardiovascular Health

A 2013 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology reports that CBD protects against the vascular damage caused by a high glucose environment, inflammation or the induction of Type-2 diabetes in animal models.*

Is CBD Legal?

Yes. Afina CBD products are derived from industrialized hemp, not marijuana. Because CBD from hemp has no psychoactive effects, the purchase, sales, or possession of hemp CBD products are legal in all 50 States. Because hemp is sometimes confused with the marijuana plant, there is still some stigma towards hemp-derived CBD, but from a legal perspective, hemp-derived CBD is legal and enjoys the rights of any other legal product.

How Much CBD Do I Give to My Pets?

Since CBD and Hemp Oil are non-toxic and non-psychoactive, you cannot give your pet too much. Although experts agree that roughly 1 mg per 10lbs at every meal is a good place to start.  We recommend the following dosages by weight for your dog or cat:*

10lb – 1.4mg = 3 to 5 drops

15lb – 2.0mg = 6 to 7 drops

20lb – 2.7mg = 8 to 9 drops

25lb – 3.4mg = 10 to 11 drops

Please check our dosage chart for other animal dosage recommendations.
